From the apostate to the lukewarm, there is one root cause, a root of bitterness.

I recently hosted a bible study on understanding the main cause of the falling away of Christians. It is a “root of bitterness.” Many who have been introduced to the gospel of Christ have rejected His testimony and have succumb to the spirit of anti-Christ. There are many anti-Christ in our midst, but they aren’t perceived as such because many people don’t know the characteristics of the spirit of anti-Christ. You can read more about that at this Article Link. Christ taught that we should, 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

He followed that immediately with this warning, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” These verses are from Matthew 7:13-15. These wolves have been defiled by a “root of bitterness” that the cross is meant to remove. Just as women travail in childbirth, every person must travail through the rebirth offered through Christ to become the new man made in His image. However, before rebirth of the new man, there must be a putting to death of the old man, this is where many go to the wayside. The majority of people have turned away from the consummation process, not willing to surrender to the terms of the marriage. Some of those that have turned away still call themselves Brides of Christ or the Church, though in truth they never knew Him intimately, but all of those who reject the truth are defiled by a “root of bitterness”.
