Dr. Tony Evans delivering his speech at the 2021 NRB convention

A friend of mine recently emailed me a YouTube link of Dr. Tony Evans speaking at the 2021 NRB convention. The subject of his email was, “This is too good not to share”. Dr. Evans is the pastor of a church in Dallas, Texas that claims to have almost 10,000 members. He is also the founder of a popular radio show called “The Urban Alternative.” I went ahead and watched the 43-minute video since there was a likelihood that Dr. Evans’s speech would come up as a topic of conversation, I wanted to ensure I was informed to share in the conversation.  I viewed the speech, and it was pretty much the same conservative Republican Christian dogma with a slightly conscious slap on the wrist to conservative Christians in the U.S. for being more patriotic to America than the kingdom of Christ. Dr. Evans saved the real chastisement for Black people with a rebuke for their support of the evil policies of Democrats (Evil was his emphasis). According to Dr. Evans, the reason for Blacks continued support of the Democratic party is putting Black culture before GOD. The use of the word evil toward Democrats registered with his Republican followers as many in the comment thread continued the demonizing of Democrats. Evans also spoke out against the merits of Critical Race Theory in Christian dialogue for solving race issues and stated that the teachings of the bible are sufficient to deal with race issues. What Evans failed to acknowledge in his speech is that Critical Race Theory would never have been theorized if founding Americans had truly embraced the teachings of the bible. In recent months, there has been quite a stir around CRT as the latest threat to peaceful American communities and to the hopes of ever reaching racial reconciliation, according to Republican conservatives.

I was compelled to leave a comment in the thread for this YouTube video of Dr. Evans’s speech which was posted on NRB’s YouTube channel. The premise of Dr. Evans speech was that GOD has been shaking things up to get the Church’s attention to evaluate themselves and ensure that they were putting the Kingdom of Christ first. A very good premise, however I felt it appropriate to bring attention to the fact that Dr. Evans showed a bias toward the Republican party in calling the policies of the Democrats evil without bringing the evils of the Republican party to light as well. I wanted all to know that Christ does not share his bias for conservative Republicans but that both the liberal Democrats and the conservative Republicans are equally abominable in the eyes of the holy and righteous King of Kings. To many people have been turned off from the gospel of Christ by professing Christian’s unwillingness to share the unadulterated truth. Dr. Evans spoke about Blacks supporting a political party that endorses the evils of abortion, homosexuality, and misuse of government, but said nothing about Whites that endorse a political party which endorses the evils of White supremacy, war mongering, and the mass incarceration and genocide of non-whites. Please understand, this post is not about endorsing any political party or political movement but calling out how deep American churches are entangled in the ways of this world.

One of the founders of the National Religious Broadcasters was Bob Jones Sr., who also founded Bob Jones University. Bob Jones University fought to uphold its religious liberty to practice segregation all the way into the 1980’s. In 2008 the University finally admitted its racist views were unbiblical. According to BBC news, Critical race theory (CRT) originated as a field of legal study in the 1970s spearheaded by Derrick Bell, Harvard University’s first permanently-appointed black law professor, to address what he saw as shortcomings in understanding how discrimination and inequity are perpetuated in the law. Maybe if Bob Jones University had been open to Critical Race Theory it would not have taken them until 2008 to realize the culture of America had compromised their ability to embrace and demonstrate the full gospel of Christ. If Dr. Evans also looked into CRT, he might have attributed the continued Black support of the Democrats to the fact that the majority of racist Democrats switched over to the Republican party after Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and the party started to shift from its mission to conserve traditional White American values.

A look into the founders of the NRB gave me a clearer understanding of why my comment was deleted or my voice silenced from their YouTube channel. Similarly, the goal of CRT is not to divide America but instead to help her understand that the systemic problems plaguing her today come from unrepented sins still imbedded from the past. Truth in a world steeped in deception is going to cause disruption and division, but the application of truth should be understood as a means of healthy pruning. That which does not produce righteous fruit needs to be severed from the plant to make it thrive. When the truth is a threat to you there is cause to examine your position in life. Christians should understand this principle.

32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Christ the King) Matt 10:32-39 NKJV

  1. Here is my original comment posted on the NRB’s YouTube channel:

Tony Evans stepped lightly around conservative whites and republicans, but pointed his finger at Black people and inferred they support evil democrats. The emphasis of evil in reference to democrats was a misrepresentation of truth because there is equivalent evil on both sides in the eyes of GOD. He failed to bring adequate light to the evils of conservative white people and the republican party in regard to what they endorse such as:
White supremacy through the targeted financial marginalization of non-whites.
Tough on crime platforms which serve as a dog-whistle for the perpetuation of mass incarceration and unjust killing of non-whites.
War mongering and the profiting from arms dealing which has resulted in the deaths of millions of innocent born people all over the planet.

Also know, Jim crow is not a thing of the past, nor convict leasing, they are both very present today. I pray the shaking that Tony Evans spoke of wakes him all the way up as well. I also hope he realizes it is time for an even deeper abandon to the Kingdom of Christ.

  2. Amen D. For the Truth of this blog! Prayer in Yeshua’s Name for conviction and redemption for all those that are blinded buy the evil of politics

  3. Neither party is centered in Christ. God does not take any side in human affairs. We stand with him, not the converse.

When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?” “Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the LORD’s army.” At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?” The commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.

    1. Great reference! Most versions of the bible say, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” To that the man with the sword drawn basically says, “Neither, I’m for the army of the Lord.” As servants of the Lord our stand should be the same.
